Drama is being creative and performing…
However, it also develops many vital life skills such as working as part of a team, problem solving, leadership and communication. Drama develops self – confidence and prepares students to think on their feet and deal with a range of situations and people. The aim of the department is to make students aware of the power and influence of theatre and how it can communicate ideas and stories to an audience.
The Drama Department
The Creative Arts Faculty plays an active role in the life of the school, with a range of productions ranging from full scale musicals, the talent show, theatre trips and workshops.
The drama department also offers other creative experiences such as:
• backstage theatre tours
• theatre trips
• residential workshops
Key Stage 3
Students in year 7 and 8 receive a double drama lesson per week on a rotated basis. During these lessons, pupils explore a range of drama mediums and key explorative strategies through creatively structured schemes of work.
We also offer a Key Stage 3 Drama Club on a Tuesday lunch time. This club aims to provide our younger pupils with the opportunity to build stage confidence and performance skills.
Year 7 Clowning Scheme of Work
At Key Stage 3, pupils are assessed and graded using the National Curriculum level descriptors as highlighted in the Arts Council’s Drama in Schools publication.
Pupil-friendly versions of the assessment criteria and levels are displayed in the Drama studio. The three areas monitored and assessed at KS3 are:
• Devising
• Performing
• Evaluating
Key Stage 4
Drama GCSE remains a very popular option and our results have remained consistently high over the past few years.

GCSE Students, King Lear, Still Image
The exam board used by the Drama department is Edexcel.
GCSE Drama is about understanding what it is like to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. Students develop their creative skills by devising their own work as well as studied the work of others.
Students who take Drama GCSE must have an interest in the Theatre. We aim to develop in students transferable life skills and encourage them to become individual communicators, as well as confident presenters of themselves.
Year 10 Pantomimes
We are committed to developing the skills and passion of our students both in and away from the classroom. The department has established a yearly tradition of high-quality theatre productions
Recent productions include: ‘Our day Out’, ‘Godspell’, Little Shop of Horrors. This year we are hoping to stage Malory Blackman’s ‘Noughts and Crosses’ in addition to a Madness production of ‘Our House’.
