Music, Drama and Dance – BTEC

Students in years 9 and 10 have the opportunity to complete the BTEC Performing Arts.  This Edexcel qualification gives students insight into the world of Performing Arts through drama, music and dance.

Students who opt into BTEC Performing Arts at year nine and complete the three year course (BTEC First Diploma) will be awarded the equivalent of four GCSE’s at a grade C or above.  Those who complete the two year BTEC (BTEC gain the equivalent of two GCSE’s at a C or above.

The BTEC First Diploma course is made up of 6 units which consist of 60 guided learning hours (GLH) each. These units are internally assessed through assignments set and marked by the tutors within the school.

The units studied in year 9, link strongly with our Business and Enterprise status.  The following units account for 50% of the BTEC First Diploma and provide students with a broad knowledge of the performing arts industry.

Unit A2: The Performing Arts Business

In this unit, students literally put on a show.  Not only do the students decide the content of the show, they also budget and market the production; run the administrative elements of the performance and undertake duties such as running the box office and bar, front of house, stage management, sound, lighting and ushering

Unit C11 Musical Theatre

In this unit, students form a theatre company.  Through workshops and guided learning tasks, students develop the necessary vocal, dance and acting skills to enable them to perform in a piece of Musical Theatre.
